Starting a New Business or Expanding an Existing Business

There are many challenges in starting a small business but it is also an exciting experience. The success of any businesses depends on the quality of your business plan. When planning an expansion to your business you may need a business plan to seek financing or new space.

Business Planning

The Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Business Service Centre has information about the many areas of business operations. You can access their services online or by calling toll-free at 1-800-668-1010. In the Deer Lake area you can avail of the Department of Innovation, Business & Rural Development. This agency will assist you in developing your own business plan.

Business Financing

There are government agencies or departments that have financing programs to support business growth. These agencies also offer counseling or advice.

In addition, you can apply for business loans from any of the banks and credit unions located in Deer Lake.

Starting a Business here in Deer Lake

Deer Lake is open for business and a great place to start your next entrepreneurial endeavor! New businesses qualify for a tax incentive program including a 0% tax rate for your first year in operation!

To encourage the development of new business in the community, the Town Council of Deer Lake has approved a Business Tax Incentive Program. The incentive exempts the new property from Business Tax for the first year and phases the tax in over five years as follows:

Year 1	Business Tax exempt
Year 2	20% of the assessed Business Tax
Year 3	40% of the assessed Business Tax
Year 4	60% of the assessed Business Tax
Year 5	80% of the assessed Business Tax
Year 6	100% of the assessed Business Tax

The incentive is also available to existing businesses that expand their operation and increase the assessed value by $50,000 or more.

Before you rent or buy space, it is best to check whether your business fits the zone for that area of the Town. You will also need to complete an Application for Permit if renovations or a new building is needed.

Check out the Business Start up Info Guide. For example, you apply for a Business Number with the Canadian Revenue Agency for filing corporate income tax, GST/HST, payroll, and import/export. All businesses with employees or are incorporated, need to register with Workplace, Health & Safety Compensation Commission.
