Position Summary:

The Town of Deer Lake is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to serve as the Municipal Bylaw Enforcement Officer. This pivotal role is responsible for upholding municipal bylaws and regulations, ensuring community safety, and fostering positive relationships within the town. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a firm commitment to impartial enforcement of local laws. The Bylaw Enforcement Officer will serve as a key representative of the Town, engaging proactively with the public and working in collaboration with law enforcement and other stakeholders to maintain a safe and harmonious community environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patrol designated areas within the Town of Deer Lake to ensure compliance with municipal bylaws and regulations.
  • Investigate complaints and concerns related to waste management, noise disturbances, property maintenance, parking infractions, and other bylaw-related matters.
  • Issue citations and enforce bylaws and parking infractions in a fair and professional manner.
  • Provide public education on municipal bylaws and regulations, encouraging voluntary compliance through positive community engagement.
  • Collaborate with local community groups, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to address and resolve issues proactively.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of all enforcement actions, investigations, and resolutions.
  • Draft and recommend new bylaws, as well as revisions to existing regulations.
  • Handle and manage insurance claims arising from municipal actions and incidents.
  • Provide security for municipal properties and special events.
  • Assist with municipal tax collection efforts as required.
  • Conduct fire safety inspections of commercial properties to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Town Manager or senior municipal staff.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education & Experience: Post-secondary education in law enforcement or a related field, coupled with at least three years of relevant work experience. Experience in municipal regulatory compliance, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage sensitive situations effectively and professionally.
  • High level of attention to detail and exceptional observational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicts and apply regulations consistently and fairly.
  • Knowledge of municipal bylaws, fire safety regulations, and law enforcement practices.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience in managing insurance claims is considered an asset.
