Deer Lake employers will be asked to come together in early January to begin discussions on how to address the Town’s labour shortage. It is currently estimated that there are more than 100 unfilled jobs at various businesses located in the community. And, with major developments ongoing that may create an additional 150 job openings, there will be even further demand for employees as the summer approaches. Representatives of the Town of Deer Lake, the Department of Advanced Education and Skills (AES) and Grenfell College have met several times to discuss possible solutions to the issue.
 
The purpose of the meeting in early January is to generate an immediate sense of the number of jobs that currently need filling. Suggestions will be provided by AES about possible solutions that may be found in the various programs the department offers. In the spring, a more formal, in-depth survey is planned in which representatives of various sectors of the business community will take part in a questionnaire administered by Grenfell College researchers. Specific details about the date, time and location of the event will be released in the coming weeks.
